A heat pump takes warmth out of the outside air and moves it into your radiators and hot water. For every unit of electricity it uses, a well-fitted one puts three to four units of heat into the house. The “well-fitted” part is what we do.

Sized to the house, not the brochure

Before we quote, an engineer measures every room: wall construction, window sizes, floor, ceiling, how many outside walls. That gives a heat loss figure for each room at a cold January day on Tyneside. The heat pump is sized to the total, and each radiator is checked against its room. Oversized heat pumps cycle on and off and cost more to run; undersized ones leave you cold in February. Neither happens on a design done properly.

The radiators question

Heat pumps run cooler water than boilers, typically 45 to 50 °C instead of 70. Some of your radiators will be big enough already. Some will not. Your quote lists each room, the radiator that is there now, and whether it stays or gets replaced. In a typical three-bedroom semi we change between two and five.

What the three days look like

On day one we fit the outdoor unit, run the pipework and remove the old boiler. Day two is the cylinder, the controls and any radiators. Day three we fill, commission, set the flow temperature, and sit down with you to explain the controls. You have hot water on every night of the install except, at most, one.

Running costs

A heat pump running at a sensible flow temperature costs about the same as gas to run, often a little less, and far less than oil, LPG or electric storage heaters. The estimator on our prices page shows a figure for your house type, and your survey report gives you one worked out for your actual rooms.
